[오늘의 생활영어] go under; 파산하다, 도산하다

(Steve walks into the kitchen as his wife Laurie is drinking coffee…)

(스티브가 부엌에 가니 아내 로리가 커피를 마시고 있는데…)



Steve: Why are you up so early?

스티브: 왜 이렇게 일찍 일어났어?

Laurie: I've been tossing and turning for hours.

로리: 잠이 안 와서 몇 시간이나 뒤척였어.

Steve: You must have a lot on your mind.

스티브: 당신 고민이 많구나.

Laurie: Yeah I guess I do. There's a lot of pressure at work.

로리: 응 그런 것 같아. 직장에서 압박을 많이 느껴.

Steve: You haven't said a thing about it.

스티브: 당신 그런 얘기 하나도 안 했잖아.

Laurie: I keep thinking it will go away.

로리: 이러다 괜찮겠지 하고 생각하는 거야.

Steve: You're not going to lose your job are you?

스티브: 실직하는 건 아니지?

Laurie: Not unless the business goes under.

로리: 회사가 도산만 하지 않으면.

Steve: Is that possible?

스티브: 그럴 가능성이 있어?

Laurie: No that won't happen. But we do have to make some changes.

로리: 아니 그런 일 없을 거야. 하지만 변화가 좀 있어야 할 거야.

▶toss and turn: 잠 못 들고 뒤척임. 전전반측.

“I toss and turn every night before I have to take a test.”

(난 시험을 앞두고는 밤마다 잠을 못 자고 뒤척여.)

▶on (one’s) mind: 마음에 걸려, 신경이 쓰여, 고민 중인.

“He just found out his sixteen year old daughter is pregnant, so he has a lot on his mind.”

(그 사람은 열 여섯 난 딸이 임신임을 알고는 고민이 많아.)

▶lose (one’s) job: 실직하다.

“He lost his job when the place he worked went under.”

(직장이 도산하면서 그 사람은 일자리를 잃었어.)
