[Student Reporters] Young Musicians Compete for $1000 Grand Prize

The Sixth Annual Young Musician's Competition took place on May 22nd at the Fullerton College Music Department Recital Hall. Young musicians from all over Orange County came to Fullerton that day to compete in one or more of the following divisions: piano strings voice and woodwind. Ages ranged from 6 to 18 with each student displaying amazing musical talent.

A total of 46 young talented musicians competed with fellow musicians of similar age. The musicians competed in front of four renowned judges. The judges: Kay Pech Kari Ivey Dr. William Chunestudy and Dr. Susan Wong were all distinguished musicians in the country. This remarkable event could not have happened if it was not for the Orange County Korean Cultural Center's hard work and dedication in promoting and sponsoring the event.

The Orange County Korean Cultural Center (OCKCC) was established in November of 2004 in hopes of promoting the rich cultural diversity in Orange County and ensuring that the next generation Koreans could better understand and contribute to the growing Korean community. In addition to the incredible music competition for youths the OCKCC is committed to sponsoring other events that help showcase the gifts and talents of today's youth. The OCKCC is always looking for bright and enthusiastic members to join and contribute to the Student Volunteer Organization (SVO) and the Parent Volunteer Organization (PVO) which are integral parts of the organization as well.

During the competition Irvine Councilmember Dr. Steven Choi made an appearance and spoke to the musicians and their parents that evening. First second and third place awards were given out in each category and on the judges' discretions a grand prize winner was chosen. This year's $1000 grand prize winner was Connor Sung. At only 6 years old he performed Nocturne #20 in C minor by F. Chopin impressing both the judges and the audience. The OCKCC had made this year's music competition an enormous success and will work towards similar goals in the future.
